Moving Home Checklist: How To Move With Confidence
When moving home, it can seem like your to-do list constantly grows. It can be easy to lose track of what you need to do and when. As expert mortgage advisors & brokers, we have created this moving home checklist, designed to give you the confidence to move with a complete list of everything you need to do.
Confirm the moving date
Confirming a moving date can be a great moment – it certainly makes the move feel like it’s finally going ahead. Once contracts have been exchanged, there’s no going back. For many, it’s a huge sigh of relief. You will now be officially moving house. But it’s not quite time to rest yet – there’s plenty more to be done.
Schedule your removal company
As soon as you have a moving date, it’s time to give your local removal company a call. It can be worth choosing a company that offers flexible moving appointments and to check for any cancellation fees in case there are any hiccups which could push back your move-in date. Although, fingers crossed all will go to plan!
Get insurance
Most likely you’ve had to arrange buildings insurance as part of the terms of your mortgage. However, there are other insurance products you may want to consider, including contents insurance, mortgage protection insurance and critical illness cover.
Start packing
You can tackle the packing yourself or arrange for your removal company to do it for you, saving you time and hassle. If you’re doing it yourself, remember to label your boxes and use extra padding and wrapping for fragile items.
Leave your home empty and clean
It’s common courtesy to leave your home empty and clean for the new occupants. You also have certain legal obligations to ensure that the property is safe and in the same condition as when it was sold.
Unpack
Once you’ve moved into your new home, it’ll be time to unpack and put your own stamp on the property.
Update your addresses
Aside from telling your friends and family, you’ll also need to update your utilities providers that you’re moving house. You may want to try and stick with your current provider or shop around to see if you can get a better deal. You can contact the Royal Mail to have your post redirected from your previous address to your new one. This will give you time to update all your contacts.
